I can taste it now, versus inhaling it

I just love a good quote,

"I can taste it now, versus inhaling it"
- Tamster

AMEN TO THAT! That is the truth!

Went to Golden Corral tonight... put a few bites of each of my favorite foods on my plate and then sat and enjoyed my ONE plate of food. THE BONUS - is that when you show your Lap-Band Card you get in for the 12 year old price... It cost a total of $10.08 for a 2 yr old, 6 yr old, and me! WHAT A DEAL!

AND IT TASTED SO GOOD! (It was shrimp night!) : )

Water? (Just drink 30 min before and wait 1 hr after eating...)

Study Shows Drinking Water Helps People Lose Weight and Keep the Pounds Off

By Bill Hendrick

Drinking water before each meal has been shown to help promote weight loss, according to a new study.

Brenda Davy, PhD, an associate professor of nutrition at Virginia Tech and senior author of a new study, says that drinking just two 8-ounce glasses of water before meals helps people melt pounds away.

The study is being presented at the 2010 National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston.

"We are presenting results of the first randomized controlled intervention trial demonstrating that increased water consumption is an effective weight loss strategy," Davy says in a news release. "We found in earlier studies that middle aged and older people who drank two cups of water right before eating a meal ate between 75 and 90 fewer calories during the meal."

She tells WebMD that many people substitute sweet-tasting calorie-containing beverages for water.

"If you look at research on beverage consumption trends, our average intake of sugar-sweetened beverages has increased dramatically in the past three or four decades," Davy tells WebMD in an email. "So, likely we are drinking other beverages in place of water."

Drinking Water and Weight Loss

Her study included 48 adults between age 55 and 75 who were divided into two groups.

One group drank two cups of water before meals and the other didn't. All
participants ate a low-calorie diet throughout the study.

After 12 weeks, water drinkers lost about 15.5 pounds, compared to non-water-drinking dieters, who lost only 11 pounds.

Davy tells WebMD that the study participants drank about 1.5 cups of water per day prior to joining in the study.

Not only were those who drank water before meals more successful after 12 weeks, but they also kept "the weight off for a full year after the weight loss study."

Even better, most water drinkers, followed for an additional 12 months, not only kept weight off but "even lost another 1 to 2 pounds," she tells WebMD.

The message, she says, is clear: "People should drink more water and less sugary, high-calorie drinks."

How Water Aids Weight Loss

She points out that folklore and everyday experience both have suggested that water promotes weight loss, but little scientific information has been offered on the topic.

This doesn't mean that good old H2O is a magic potion, but that drinking water may help people shed pounds for the simple reason that it has no calories and fills up the stomach, making people less hungry.

Davy says water makes people feel fuller, inducing them to eat less food. She also offers good news for those who prefer diet sodas and other drinks with artificial sweeteners, saying such liquid refreshment fills people up, too. But she advises against drinking beverages made tasty with sugar and high fructose corn syrup, which are high in calories.

Davy says no one knows how much water people should drink daily, and that the federal Institute of Medicine says healthy people can let thirst be their guide.

However, she recommends that women drink about nine cups of fluids every day, including water and other beverages, and men about 13 cups.

It is possible, she adds, to drink too much water, which can lead to a rare but serious condition known as water intoxication.

The study was funded by the Institute for Public Health and Water Research,
a nonprofit, independent science and education organization.

This study was presented at a medical conference. The findings should be
considered preliminary as they have not yet undergone the "peer review"
process, in which outside experts scrutinize the data prior to publication
in a medical journal.

Note from me: I really find that if I am getting hungry and it's not "feeding time" then I can go and drink some water and for the most part keep myself from snacking.

Also, I often have to ask myself... am I hungry? or am I thirsty? So many times... I have eaten only to feel unsatisfied... and DYING of thirst.

Gotta love calorie free water! -H

Iron Deficiency? Old wifes tale?

(Me after my training with Karly, but hey, I look thinner in the face... it kinda took me by surprise) - (a good surprise!)

As I have written before, ever since my Lap-Band Surgery, I have REALLY struggled around my "period" with foggy head and migraines. It is all new to me so I am just trying to figure things out. Went to see my primary Doctor about it and he said that I would just need to treat the symptoms for now.. because while I am losing so much weight my body is in turmoil and there is not much they can do for me. : ( I even went and had my eyes checked.... (I have perfect vision)

Well.. last night while I was working out with my trainer... I kept mentioning how light headed I felt. Especially when I went from exercises on the floor to standing up. Finally she asked if I was anemic? (iron deficient) I said, I didn't think I was but I haven't taken my iron pills in months because they are not chewable. She said that one of her nutrition classes told her that you can take a "real" gold ring and rub it on the cheek of the person who is in question and if it leaves behind a mark then that person is iron deficient.

When I got home I tried my husband's wedding band.. and low and behold... I got a black mark on my cheek. I went around and tried the kids, my sister and my husband. Nothing! I went and washed the mark off and tried again with my wedding ring.

What do you think? I am thinking that this girl needs to take her iron pills. I really have been feeling so horrible around my period. Fatigue, foggy in the head, lightheaded and migraines... I don't know why this works but I am a believer. All my symptoms hit at a iron deficiency being my problem.

It may not be scientifically proven but I am going to treat myself for anemia. I'll start with taking my iron supplements and if I don't see any improvement... I'll visit with my Doctor about it.

So there you have it. VERY INTERESTING! : )

What is a typical day for me...

Patty this is for you! ; ) Since you asked... I figure others would want to know too!

Food Journal

7 - 7:30 am - WATER (about 2 large glass fulls)

8:30 am - Breakfast

Options -
- 3 scoops of protein powder mixed with 1 cup of milk and water - 330 calories
- 2 soft boiled eggs with a 50 calorie piece of toast w/ butter - 3o0 calories
- 1 egg, 3 pieces of turkey bacon and piece of toast w/ butter - 300 calories

12:00 pm - Lunch

Options -
- Frozen Lean Cuisine - 300 calories
- Left overs from night before - no more than 300 calories
- Mac Snack Wrap with out cheese - 300 calories

3:00 pm - Snack

Options -
- no more than 150 calories often it will be a Wasa cracker with some lunch meat on it. Which is more like 100 calories.
- Air popped popcorn with a low calorie butter spray and salt.
- A 60 calorie pudding (but then I am still slightly hungry) : )

6:00 pm - Dinner

Options -
- Since I am cooking for the family during this hour I eat whatever is on the menu... Sometimes I can substitute in something different but for the most part I eat the same things... I only put on my plate about 1 cup of food... made up of mostly protein and veggies with a small side of carbs (noodles/potatoes/etc)

I try to make dinner my last meal of the day. If I eat anything after dinner it normally is junk or has too many calories. If I go to bed around 9:30 I don't get hungry but if it's a later night... I have to be very careful cause I get hungry and I HATE going to bed with my stomach growling.

As always... the "schedule" is VERY important to me... if I don't schedule my meals then I tend to graze and eat whenever and whatever I can. Not a good thing! This way... if I am hungry at 11am I just say to myself... "hang on, lunch is in 1 hour, that's not far away... go busy yourself for an hour." It works wonders!! This is also the time that I will try and get in extra water... it helps hold off the hunger.

Feed me...

Been trying to eat on a schedule the last two days. It is working really, really well.

Here is my schedule:
6-7:30am - Water, Water, and more Water
8am - Breakfast (300ish calories)
12pm - Lunch (300ish calories)
3:30pm - Snack (100ish calories)
6pm - Dinner (300ish calories)

Trying to stay within 30 mins of my selected time. I was hungry this morning at 10:30am told myself that lunch was only a little more than an hour away... drank a cup and half of water and was able to forget about being hungry. That is just nuts! Something I would have struggled with before the band.

I have such a past of grazing that this really has put eating in perspective for me. Food = Fuel!

Also, I have really been trying to eat no more than a cup of food per meal... and trying to keep my main meals approximately around 300 calories (give or take).

If I go to bed late I normally have to add a bedtime snack in... but that just feels like wasted calories... solution? Go to bed earlier. LOL!

Tip - www.dlife.com

I am on the hunt for yummy low calorie foods. I LOVE to cook so of course I am always trying to change things up around here and try new and exciting dishes. I just ran across this website:

http://www.dlife.com/diabetes/diabetic-recipes/

It's a diabetic site and I am not diabetic nor is this a diabetic blog but we probably should all be eating like we are diabetic... at least to some degree. : )

I love that you can pick what you are looking for right from the front page, low calorie, low carbs, by course and by main ingredients. I could go on and on... check it out. You might like it too...

Ha, Ha, Ha!!

I just stumbled on to Jared Fogle's blog.. (the Subway guy) and this is what I read!!

4. CAUTION WITH THE KIDS MENU

Unless you are at Subway, the kid's menu is usually the least healthy section of the menu. I like to avoid it altogether. Many restaurants will allow you to choose 'half-orders' of dishes on the adult menu. If the restaurant doesn't do half-orders, consider splitting a dish with your child.

Ha! Ha! So, Bandsters/Friends... you better watch those children menus. (see post below) I actually think that you can do fine with a children's menu order (see below example) but just choose better options than a deep fried chicken crisper. lol.

Here's the link to Jared's blog:

Chili's Resturant

Used my handy dandy Lap-Band Patient card at Chili's last night. Ordered off the children's menu... but should have asked for a nutrition guide before I ordered... sigh.

I had: (from the Children's Menu)

Little Chicken Crispers - 600 Calories
Side of Homestyle Fries - 250 Calories

FOR A TOTAL OF: 850 Calories

(not so good for someone trying to stay around a 1000 calories a day)

The adult version of this same meal:
Chicken Crispers - 1750 calories

A better choice would have been: (about any other item from the children's menu) lol.

Grilled Chicken Platter - 170 Calories
Side of Homestyle Fries - 250 Calories

Grand Total - 420 Calories

or even better...

Grilled Chicken Platter - 170 Calories
Side of Seasonal Veggies - 35 Calories

Grand Total - 205 Calories

Interesting...

I was reading the USA Weekend paper (from Sundays' paper) and I ran across this short article on Vanna White.

It asked the question: How does Wheel of Fortune's Vanna White keep herself looking so good?

She said that she works out six days a week for 45 minutes... and as for a diet, "I've learned to eat only when I'm hungry. That's a big one."

hmmmm.... interesting. That is actually a lot of what a Bandster is learning to do... sounds SO easy doesn't it?
